“Poison Study” by Maria V. Snyder

I loved this book! It’s one of those books that’s shelved in YA but it really doesn’t matter because you get completely sucked in. I read it just a few evenings (which is very fast for me) and I found myself thinking about it all day at work.

I won’t give any spoilers because I know you’re going to go pick it up right away, but I’ll give you the basics. The story takes place in a fantasy world that vaguely resembles medieval Europe. At the beginning of the book a young woman, named Yelena, is in prison on a death sentence. One day she is offered a choice: take a job as the Commander’s food taster or take the noose.

Ok, obviously she doesn’t choose death. But I won’t give away any more of the plot.

I really liked the characters in this book – they’re all unique and feel like real people. And the author isn’t afraid to throw in a few curve balls! I also really dug the action – Yelena gets into some pretty exciting situations.

Completely enjoyable book. As soon as I finished it I immediately wanted the second book, and I’m halfway through the third one now. Go get it!
